How Old Is Old Enough To Play Outside Alone?

Our new neighborhood is fabulous, tons of young families, and tons of kids. I love that my kids have friends to play with and can safely ride their bikes out front and play in our grass with no worries. My kids are 11, 10, and 8, and they are allowed to play on our street (not a through street) but not allowed to cross the streets on either side or play inside anyone's house without asking permission first. I tend to worry more than I need to and my 8 year is less mature than the older two so I don't even let her play outside unless her older brother and sister are outside or at least one of her friends (you know safety in numbers).

In our old neighborhood in Maryland their were lots of kids that had much further boundaries than my kids, like crossing major streets and going alone to McDonald's or 7-11. I quickly realized my kids weren't going to have the same boundaries as the other kids and I was okay with that. In Maryland we lived on a dead end street with no traffic and my neighbor and friend would let her 4 year old roam around her backyard and my front yard with his older sisters, which seemed okay given their was no traffic and always a ton of older kids outside.

Here in our new neighborhood there seems to be two types of parents, which seems to correspond with both their parenting style and the age of their oldest child. The first type of parents tend to be more conservative: they know where their kids are at all times, they are outside with their kids, they know the other parents in the neighborhood. The second type of parents are a lot more relaxed: they let their kids roam around the neighborhood, the neighborhood park, the lake, inside people's houses they do not know.

I guess I fall somewhere in the middle since my kids are a little older: I always know where they are but I don't have to be outside with them at all times, I've tried to meet as many of the neighbors as possible, especially the neighbors with kids, and I only let my kids play inside one of my neighbor's house, who I've gotten to know over the past month. The neighbor kids keep begging my kids to ask to have a sleepover but I've told me kids that won't be happening until I know their families a lot better.

Our neighborhood has a couple four year olds from different families that roam around minimally supervised. Yesterday one of the little girls was riding her bike outside alone and totally face planted several houses down from her home. No one was outside besides me (cleaning my garage) so I of course ran over and scooped the girl up. I barely know the kid so after picking her and her bike up she wanted to ride home, screaming, alone. I don't blame her, she doesn't know me from any other stranger but where were the parents or at least the older brother or sister? Today a different 4 year old spent a lot of time at my house without probably anyone knowing she was there. She wasn't hurting anything but it just amazes me that 4 year olds roam the neighborhood without supervision. Call me paranoid but there is no way my 4 year old would be outside alone. I know the chance some scary person would scoop them up off the street is almost slim to none but what about traffic or getting hurt or just getting into trouble. I would just worry myself sick and really it isn't worth it.

So what do you all think? Am I paranoid? Should I be more relaxed? How do you handle this with your children?

Adventure + Alone Time = Great Date

Last weekend hubby and I got to have an awesome full-day date. We spent the day in the mountains whitewater rafting and finished the day out with yummy lunch at a local brewpub. We didn't capture any pictures of the actual rafting since we had to lock our stuff in our car once we checked in but it will suffice to say rafting was EPIC and we had a great time.

We rafted the Brown's Canyon section of the Arkansas river in Buena Vista. This is a popular stretch of river for whitewater rafting. It has class III and IV rapids and we were lucky to raft on a high water day to make the adventure even more fun.

This wasn't my first time rafting this section of river, this is near where I went to church camp as a teenager and we rafted it with camp each summer. Nate and I even rafted here before when we were first dating. It was neat to see all the familiar landmarks on the drive there.

Since Nate and I are seasoned rafting pros we did decide despite all the fun we had, we are ready for a bigger challenge and need some class IV and V rapids next summer. I think we may take this trip next time if I can figure out a way to get a discount. This rafting trip only cost us $29 per person thanks to Living Social.

We asked our river guides for the best local place to eat in Buena Vista and they sent us to Eddyline and we weren't disappointed. We sat in the sun on the patio and enjoyed a sampler paddle of 6 of their beers, delicious hummus and pita bread, and a very unique but yummy whole wheat pizza made with fresh lavender.

The day included about 6 hours of driving between driving to rafting, driving back to my father-in-laws to pick up the kids, and driving home but it was great scenery and nice weather so it was hard to complain about all the car time.

Highway 285 near Fairplay, South Park, and Como in what I call, "the big field in the middle of the mountains"

South Park, Colorado, you know, where the show South Park is set.

Cows, fields, and mountain backdrops, breathtaking!

Lunchtime!

We're happy to be back in Colorado and happy to be able to go on fun dates like whitewater rafting and lunch at a local brewpub. Yay for summer! Yay for rafting! Yay for local beer! Yay for dates with my hubby!

Meet The Two Newest Members Of Our Family

We added two new members to our family in April and I never got the chance to introduce you to them, how rude of me!

God has truly blessed us over these past 6 months and we wanted to share some of our blessings with those in the world who are less fortunate than us. Back in September we began sponsoring our first child through Compassion, Ruth who lives and Ghana. Over the past 9 months we have enjoyed getting to know her better and be able to help her life be a little easier. I won't lie that the "get to know you" process is easy, it isn't. Communicating through letters across cultural and language barriers takes time. A hard thing for us Americans in the technology age to understand, but it's happened and we look forward to getting to know Ruth even better.

Compassion International was a charity I heard of as a teenager at church. It seemed like something that would be a great experience, not only for the child whose life you are changing but for your own but I never seriously considered it since we were never in a financial position where I could make the ongoing commitment. Then things began to change, mostly in my heart, but I began to realize I didn't have to wealthy or have everything figured out to change a child's life. When we began to sponsor Ruth our financial situation was improving but nothing to the degree it has now. Instead we took a leap of faith and decided to sponsor her and have loved every minute of it. Also, reading about Kristen from We Are THAT Family's trip to Kenya with Compassion really put the idea of sponsoring a child on my heart again. And now Kristen has started her own charity, a maternity home in Kenya. It is amazing the things God can do with one little person!

After our experience with Ruth and experiencing all the blessings that have came our way over the past 6 months, God put it on my heart to sponsor more children. I thought my husband would think I'm crazy and say no. Things are going well for us but we still have a ton of student loan debt to pay off and lots of financial goals to meet ourselves. But guess what, hubby didn't bat an eye, he said, "I think that is a good idea" and here we are today with the two newest members of our family.

Maite, age 4, Bolivia, shares a birth date with Phoenix

Samuel, age 11, India, shares his exact birth date with Brennan

Ruth, Maite, and Samuel, on our fridge as our daily reminder of their presence in our lives.

I don't know what God has planned for my life. I'd love to change the world in big ways! I've thought about starting a local non-profit, I've thought about a lot of other things, but for now I am okay with making big changes in a few children's lives. We'll see what the future holds.

We Made It!

Days of packing and loading and cleaning, followed by 1700 miles of driving, followed by lots of waiting, then unloading, and unpacking; that was tiring, but we made it!

Colorado is even more wonderful than I remembered it. Our new house is a perfect fit for our family. Our neighborhood is awesome, private lake, playground, tons of kids, very friendly neighbors on both sides. We couldn't have found a better place for our family. And to top it off we are less than 3 miles from hubby's work.

We're still getting settled but thanks to professional movers everything is unpacked. Our stuff only made it here 4 days ago and we've spent those past few days getting organized and finding a spot for everything. Now we have to decorate, hang pictures and artwork, and it will really feel like home. It is all going quicker and smoother than I imagined!

The kids have made several new friends in the neighborhood and our neighbors invited us over for a movie night and BBQ. Lots of our family and friends have been up to see our new place and the rest will be up on the 16th for our housewarming party. I think I've even lined up a new job for myself in the fall as a 3 day per week nanny for infant twins.

To say I am feeling blessed is an understatement! The past few months were challenging but now that we're here in Colorado and all back together as a family it was all worth it.

I'll post more pictures once the house is all put together but here are a few sneak peeks:
